HOCKEY

run run run run run run
the free feeling of running
Sends shivers down my hockey stick
On the wing
of a prayer
I dribble that hockey ball
here there and everywhere.
I know I run fast.
Exuberance.
I love that sudden change of pace
I initiate
When they pass me the ball.
I love them cheering my name
As I dash past.
I am a horse let loose
From the stable.
I am a gypsy who can
Fling the flamenco
Around the pitch
And swing her hockey stick
Like a broom and a witch.
I swing it loosely and with whimsey
Around in the air
After not scoring
But not caring
Breathing fast in acknowledgement
Of a goal not scored
A path not trod.
And my hair has lost all purpose
A clip having dropped
Somewhere in the hockey grass.
I celebrate my non-scoring like a true Georgie Best
With all the rest
Of them cheering again.
And the teacher laughs inwardly,
Then
TELLS ME OFF !!!!
and
PUTS ME IN DETENTION !!!!

CODA ( I can't hit the ball dead hard
Like Evangeline Payne
But she can't run fast like me.
She's a centre forward
I'm a natural winger.
She can play piano quite well,
But I'm a fucking great singer)
