Poem for Jordy “When Sadness Arrived”

When sadness arrived
It didn’t shake our hands
In a perfunctory fashion
And say ‘I can’t stay long’

Instead
It shook our insides
Like a drill making rocks crumble
Away into the sea.

It stored our tears
Like caged birds
Then set them free.

And they washed
Our quivering arms and chests
In spurts and floods
Til dryness was exhaustion.

When sadness arrived
We weren’t ready,
We hovered
Not knowing
Who would answer the door.

When sadness arrived
Animals cried
With us.
We were scaffold for us all.
We looked to each other
For reflection
We found comfort
In other’s sadness and expression.

When sadness arrived
It stayed too long,
It couldn’t find the way out.
‘Time will show it the door’ they said,
But me I’m not so sure.
